Described as ''a book students will read,'' the 8th edition of America: A Narrative History is continues the success of the series' previous editions. This time-tested reference that has been around for over 25 years, making it an authority when it comes to American history. The book retains its engaging narrative style, offering first person stories and sketches to make studying history more interesting for both students and instructors. This edition also includes study aids and offers access to complementary materials and electronic resources to help students learn more effectively. Authors George Brown Tindall and David Shi presents history in its social, cultural, and political context, and at the same time offers a new perspective on religion. The second volume covers American history from the 1850s to the modern times. America: A Narrative History (Eighth Edition) (Vol. 2) ISBN 9780393934076 by Tindall and Shi offers discussions of the transformation of the south and the west, the development of big businesses and entrepreneurship, as well as the rise of urban America. Other topics include immigration and popular culture, education and profession, social gospel, and urban reform. The second volume also offers an extensive coverage of modern America, from the era of new imperialism to the War of 1898, and imperialism rivalries in East Asia. There is also a chapter on the progressive era, plus a discussion of Roosevelt's progressivism and his second term in office. The Great War is discussed, after which comes modernism in the 1920s and then the Republican resurgence. The authors give special emphasis to culture in the 1930s, isolationism, and the Second World War. There is also a discussion of the American Age and other important milestones from 1945to 1960, including the paradoxical era. The book goes into the terms of presidents Nixon and Reagan, the Bush Administration, as well as the transition at the turn of the century, from Bush to Clinton. Topics like global terrorism and the election of 2000 are likewise tackled.
